Did you know?
In 2008, research by the World Health Organisation indicated that AIDS-related illnesses remain one of the leading causes of death globally and are projected to continue as a significant global cause of premature death in the coming decades.

According to UNAIDS’ recent research (refers to the end of 2008) published in the AIDS epidemic update of Dec 2009; more than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.  Also, it is believed that over 250,000 South Africans died of AIDS in 2008.

The reality is that everyone is affected by HIV and AIDS and may be exposed to HIV at anytime, anywhere. Exposure to HIV is unpredictable and occurs in various ways:)

Accidental sexual transmissions resulting from sexual assault and rape

Blood transfusions

Coming directly into contact with infected bodily fluids through incidents such as sporting injuries or vehicle accidents

Occupational exposure, especially in the health care industry (e.g. needle stick injuries)

Defcon 5 know your status plan
This plan was designed to ensure that Defcon 5 members have access to confidential testing and treatment within the 5 hour window period after potential exposure, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of becoming HIV positive, as well as ongoing management and treatment of those already living with HIV.

How the Plan works
HIV positive management
HIV is no longer a death sentence, and HFC has designed the Defcon5 plan to encourage members to live positively.  As a member of Defcon5, you are encouraged to come forward and be tested in order that you can make the necessary plans to improve the health of you and your family.

The first step would be to contact our confidential call centre, who will arrange and pay for a voluntary counselling and testing session to determine your status.

Did you know?
Research by Interpol has shown that a woman gets raped every 17 seconds in South Africa. It was estimated that one in every two women would be raped.

Think about it this way
One in two women in South Africa could be at risk of accidentally contracting HIV through rape

How to survive rape
Knowing how to react may not prevent you from being raped, but it may shield you from further trauma.

Try to remain calm.
Try and memorise what the rapist looks like so that you will be able to make identification later.  If there is a gang, try to remember at least one attacker.  Do not make it obvious that you are doing this.

Fighting back may simply give the rapist sexual pleasure and increase your risk of being injured or killed.  Remain calm unless you believe you can fight them off or deter them.  You have a better chance of this in a public place than in an isolated setting.
